Dear Readers,

In a few hours, President Obama will share his latest vision of the budget. Previews indicate that he’s likely to walk a so-called “centrist” path toward cutting social spending and benefits, while also proposing taxes on the rich.

What’s wrong with this picture? Without staking out a firm position, convincing the powerful plutocrats in Congress to raise taxes on their sponsors will be next to impossible. By compromising at the start, the president will inevitably end up with a plan that’s even more destructive than his initial offer.

There is, however, a different solution – one which is being proposed by the largest caucus in the House of Representatives. The People’s Budget, crafted by the Progressive Caucus, outlines a plan to save our country by curtailing outrageous war spending, investing in Americans who are out of work by creating badly needed infrastructure projects, strengthening social security, creating a public health care option, taxing Wall Street and the rich, and protecting the environment.

While this plan is projected to reach a budget surplus by 2021, chances are you’re not going to hear a word about it in the president’s speech or in the subsequent corporate media discussion.

What would the future look like if we had the power to force future presidents to compromise with progressives, instead of compromising with the plutocracy?

Let’s thank our Progressive Caucus by amplifying its voice. We can move the conversation with a concerted effort to bring real solutions and trustworthy information to the people who need them.
